The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge will be conducting “Under Cover of Darkness” tours (check the tour schedule for exact dates). Reservations are required and may be made by telephoning the Refuge Headquarters at (580) 429-3222 weekdays between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm on specified reservation dates.
These interpretive tours are open to the general public. Participants will have an opportunity to search for wildlife and other special features of the night. This tour is unique in that it describes an aspect of the Refuge that visitors do not normally experience. The tours are led by members of the Association of the Friends of the Wichitas. Interpreters will assist visitors in understanding the management practices of the Refuge for all species of animals and their habitats, especially those associated with the night.
Flashlights with red lens covers are recommended to increase safety moving to and from the bus. Tours will originate at the Visitor Center. Visitors may obtain a Refuge leaflet and map from one of the dispensers located at each of the five entrances.
Each tour will depart promptly at 8:30 pm. Ten minutes prior to departure, standbys meeting the age requirement will be accepted. The tour lasts approximately 2.5 hours
Interested persons are advised that the Refuge’s public interpretive program is intended for individuals and family units. Only one family’s reservation will be accepted per telephone call. We regret we cannot offer group tours to schools and organizations, but invite all interested individuals to call for reservations which are taken on a first come, first served basis. For those persons requiring accommodations, the tour bus is handicapped accessible when requested at the time of reservation.
