Bring work gloves, water and a snack and be prepared to walk two or more miles over rough ground with boulders. Let Helen know at  volunteer@friendsofthewichitas.org if you will be coming so we will know how many vehicles to have available.
Overview of project: Bobby Williamson and Bobby Glass are heading up a team to pull mullein each Saturday.  Meet at the Visitor Center at 9:00 a.m. and bring snacks, water and work gloves.  Be prepared to walk about 2 miles on rough ground.  Project lasts at least four hours for transportation time and work.  Any Saturday you plan to come please let Helen  know at  volunteer@friendsofthewichitas.org.  That way we can be sure to have enough tools and trucks and we can let you know if we cancel because of weather or illness.

I would be interested in doing this. Is this done every Saturday?

Yes, pretty much it is every Saturday – but contact Helen at volunteer@friendsofthewichitas.org for specifics for any given week.

Sorry I didn’t answer this sooner – I’m still trying to figure out how to make comments show up where I can see them.

How the plant is affecting the local flora?

It crowds out the native plants by growing in ever-enlarging dense colonies. The native plants are the food sources for the animals, from micro-fauna through the big grazing animals. My guess would be that it probably uses more water due top plant size, even though it has hairy leaves. I does change drainage too and may increase erosion by lose of the smaller plants to break up and disperse rain drops providing for less run-off.

For the most current information on activities on the refuge, check the calendar. It is also linked from the “About” tab at the top of the page.
