The Geology Hike Reservations open beginning 4/10/17

Get up-close and personal with the spectacular landscapes of the Wichita Mountains! And this year the flowers are popping!

The Geology Hike provides visitors with an introduction to the geology of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Members from the Association of Friends of the Wichitas serve as interpretive guides for the tours. Topics include basic geology, with some information on plants, wildlife and habitat diversity.The hike will last approximately three hours and is rated moderate.

Reservations are required for Geology Hikes and are taken on a first-come, first-served basis beginning on the reservation date above. This Hike provides visitors with an introduction to the geology of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Members from the Association of Friends of the Wichitas serve as interpretive guides for the tours. Topics include basic geology, with some information on plants, wildlife and habitat diversity.

The hike will last approximately three hours and is rated moderate. Due to the length and difficulty of the hikes, children must be at least eight years of age. Participants are encouraged to dress accordingly, wear sturdy shoes appropriate for hiking, and bring personal drinking water as well as a high-energy snack.

Hike participants should meet at the Visitor Center, located at the intersection of Highways 49 and 115. Visitors may obtain a Refuge leaflet and map from one of the dispensers located at each of the five entrances. The bus will depart from the Visitor Center parking-lot promptly at 9 a.m. Reservations will be retained until ten minutes prior to departure on each date. After that time, stand-bys will be accepted.

The Refuge’s tours are intended for individuals and family groups of six persons or less. Only one family’s reservation will be accepted per telephone call. We invite all interested individuals to call for reservations which are taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. Reservations must be made by telephoning the Visitor Center on the following line only: (580) 429-2197, beginning on the reservation date between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
