Wilderness Act 50th Anniversary Hike (Spring Wilderness Hikes)
(This hike is part of our tours done on the refuge and not the regular hikes we do each weekend at no cost)

Friends of the Wichitas will be leading hikes that are open to the public April 12th, 19th, and 26th.

The hikes are rated strenuous, which includes the crossing of the Valley of the Boulders. Persons who are not in “fit” physical condition are invited to watch throughout the year for less strenuous hikes and walks. Due to the length and difficulty of the hikes, children must be at least eight years of age. Participants must wear sturdy rubber soled shoes and layer clothing appropriate for anticipated weather conditions. Hikers will want to bring personal drinking water and a high energy snack. Hikes will last approximately three hours and are limited to 12 people. Call (580) 429- 2151 from 9:00 am – 4:30 pm weekdays to make reservations. A $5.00 reservation fee per participant will be collected at the time of check-in. The bus will depart from the Visitor Center around 9:00 am.

The hikes provide visitors with an opportunity to experience a portion of the Charons Garden Wilderness Area under the guidance of an interpreter. Topics for interpretation include basic geology, plants, wildlife, and habitat diversity. Guides and interpreters for the hikes are members of the Friends of the Wichitas.
